I researched a few options on my trusty QWERTY but came to a full stop, overwhelmed at the choices available. Facts and figures are all very well, but how do you decide what will suit a family's needs, with such a large dip into the financial pocket, without making a huge mistake? And have you seen the price of oil and electricity lately!!!!
On my wish list was an Aga. Mention Aga to anyone and they will have strong and often very emotional opinions and step firmly into the 'ayes' or the 'noes' camp. Never having had an Aga, I must admit to being seduced by the idea of a warm, metal heart in the kitchen on which I can pile my laundry to air, warm my backside whilst gossiping on the phone and if ever the unlikely need arose, be able to revive newborn lambs.
Taking off the rose tinted spectacles, I was under no illusions that an Aga would suddenly inspire me with a love of cooking, whatever the hue. Although it can roast, simmer, bake and broil, it can’t grill. As cakes are the only thing I choose to make for pleasure (if my arm is twisted) I was told an Aga was not the best choice. What about the summer? Do I turn it off and then have to include another smaller oven and hob somewhere at the cost of work surface, or swelter when we have a heat wave?(Okay, don't laugh, the weathermen have been promising us one of those for years but dreams can come true with enough happy thoughts and pixie dust).
Nick (thankfully for me) loves cooking and had his eye on an induction hob. Energy efficient, quick and easy to clean, it would be the perfect toy for his engineering brain to savour but of course blew the Aga question right out of the equation. Whilst I could see the merits of his argument and that particular electric appliance, I had to admit my heart secretly belonged to the 'ayes'.
In my fantasy world of role reversal when I was the bread winner and Nick stayed at home tied to the kitchen catering for my needs ( I said it was fantasy)I would have let him have his choice without a fight. Would he appreciate the bottom warming services of a metal beast in quite the same way as me? And what about all those new born lambs that may need my help to survive during the heatwave? I pleaded my case with passion but as you can see from the picture, this time the 'ayes' didn't win.
